National Mission on Micro Irrigation (NMMI)
The Scheme was launched by the Department of Agriculture and Cooperation, Ministry of Agriculture in January, 2006 as Centrally Sponsored Scheme on Micro Irrigation (CSS) for promoting water-use efficiency by adopting drip and sprinkler irrigation. In June 2010, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs approved the implementation of the existing Micro Irrigation Scheme (MIS) was up-scaled to National Mission on Micro Irrigation (NMMI) with an outlay of Rs. 8032.90 crore, which continued till the year 2013-14. NMMI is a Centrally Sponsored Scheme in which 40% of the cost of the MI system is borne by the Central Government, 10% by the State Government and the remaining amount is borne by the beneficiary either through his/ her own resources or loan from financial institutions. Additional assistance of 10% of the cost of the MI system is borne by the Central Government in respect of small and marginal farmers (i.e. Small and marginal farmers get subsidy of 60 per cent and for other beneficiaries, 50 per cent for an area up to 5 hectare under the Government of India share). All States and Union Territories and all horticultural as well as agricultural crops are covered under the scheme.
