Indian State of Forest Report 2021 at a Glance
About ISFR 2021:
Forest Survey of India stated assessing Forest Cover of our country during 1987 for the first time. Since then Survey of Forest in the country is conducted every two year and the detailed report is published in the name of Indian State of Forest Report. Recently 17th report titled Indian State of Forest Report 2021 is published by the Forest Survey of India.
As per the National Forest Policy of India 1988, Minimum 33 percent of the geographical area of our country needs to be covered under forest and tree cover to maintain ecological balance in the country.

There has been a net increase of 1,540 sq km in the Forest Cover during last two years.
Odisha and Maharashtra are the top two states with significant increase in Mangrove cover over two years.
Forest Cover is classified into following class in terms of canopy density
- Very Dense Forest – Tree canopy density of 70 % and above
- Moderately Dense Forest – Tree canopy density between 40 to 70 %
- Open Forest – Tree canopy density between 10 to 40 %
- Scrub – Tree canopy density of less than 10 %
- Non Forest – Land not included in the above
