  1. Turlock Singh invents the concept of standard acre.

  1. Indian Agricultural Research Institute started in Delhi Intensive Cultivation Scheme in 19 Villages at the initiative of K.M. Munshi.
  2. Garden Colony Scheme Launched in Punjab.

  1. Fertilizer factory set up at Sindri (Bihar).
  2. The Japanese mint, source of menthol, introduced into India by Sir R.N. Chopra.

  1. Institute of Agriculture Research Statistics, which made a modes beginning in 1933 as a Statistics, Wing of the ICAR, comes into being. (It was strengthened and renamed Indian Agricultural Statistics Research Institute in 1978).
  2. Central arid zone research institute established at Jodhpur (Rajasthan).
1960
  1. International Rice Research Institute established at Los Banos, Philippines. Over the years, this institute actively collaborated with rice research in India.
  2. Govind Ballabh Pant University of Agriculture and Technology set up at Pantnagar, Uttar Pradesh.

  1. Fertilizer Corporation of India set up at New Delhi.
  2. Intensive Agricultural District Programme (IADP) stated in seven districts. Package of agricultural practices prepared for wheat and rice cultivation in the States.
  3. Dwarflines of wheat incorporating Norin Genes released by N.E. Borlaug at CIMMYT, Mexico.
  4. These varieties later had a major impact on India’s Green Revolution.
1962
  1. Central Sheep and Wool Research Institute started at Avikanagar, Rajasthan.
  2. Punjab Agricultural University set up at Ludhiana, Punjab (inaugurated on 8 July 1963).
  3. Orissa University of Agriculture and Technology set up at Bhubaneshwar, Orissa.
  4. Indian Grassland and Fodder Research Institute established at Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh.
1963
  1. N.E. Borlaug visits India, On return to Mexico he sends 100 kg seed of each of the dwarf and semi-dwarf wheat varieties and 613 primary selections in advanced generation to the IARI.
  2. The IARI arranged multi-location testing programme at Delhi, Ludhiana, Pusa, Kanpur, Pantnagar, Bhowali and Wellington. Out of these, ‘Kalyan Sona’ was independently selected at Delhi and Ludhiana, and ‘Sonalika’ at Delhi.
  3. Central Tuber Crops Research Institute started at Trivandrum, Kerala .
  4. The National Seeds Corporation set up.
1964
  1. Intensive Agricultural Areas Programme (IAAP) started in 114 blocks, with M.S. Randhawa as Director-General.
  2. C. Subramaniam appointed Minister for Food and Agriculture and Community Projects Government of India.
  3. India faces food crisis due to prolonged drought.

  1. About 250t of wheat seed imported from Mexico.
  2. B.P. Pal appointed Vice-President of the ICAR. He was the first agricultural scientist to hold this post.
  3. Andhra Pradesh Agricultural University set up at Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh.
  4. University of Agricultural Sciences set up at Bangalore, Karnataka.
  5. National Dairy Development Board formed at Anand, Gujarat.
  6. Agricultural Prices Commission established.
  7. Warehousing Corporation set up.
1966
  1. The Report of the Education Commission (Headed by Dr. D.S. Kothari) recommends the setting up of at least one agricultural university in each State.
  2. Agro-industries Corporations set up in Bihar, Punjab and Tamil Nadu.
  3. Start of the Green Revolution.
  4. ‘Rojo 69’ and ‘Sonora 64’ imported from Mexico.
  5. Neyveli Fertilizer Plant commissioned.
1967
  1. Indian Institute of Horticultural Research started at Bangalore, Karnataka.
  2. International Rice Research Institute, Philippines, enters into an agreement with the ICAR and the USAID to participate in the development of rice research in India. This led to development of many high-yielding varieties of rice.
  3. All-India co-ordinated Research Project on Soybean started by the ICAR.
  4. C.T. Patel develops hybrid cotton, ‘H 4’. Which gave a yield of 6,918 kg per hectare.

  1. Wealth tax imposed on agricultural land.
  2. Assam Agricultural University set up at Jorhat, Assam.
  3. Central soil Salinity Research Institute started at Karnal, Haryana.
1970
  1. Central Plantain Crops Research Institute started at Kasargod, Kerala.
  2. Haryana Agricultural University set up at Hissar, on account of bifurcation of the Punjab Agricultural University.
  3. Indian Dairy Corporation started with V. Kurien as Chairman.
  4. Operation Flood started by the National Dairy Development Board.
1971
  1. Directorate of Agricultural Aviation started by the Government of India.
  2. Tamil Nadu Agricultural University set up at Coimbatore.
  3. Rajendra Agricultural University set up at Patna, Bihar.
1972
  1. Ceiling on Land-holdings fixed at 4–7 hectares of double-cropped land per family.
  2. International crops Research Institute for Semi-arid Tropics established at Hyderabad ,
  3. Andhra Pradesh, with R.W. Cummings as its first Director.
  4. Kerala Agricultural University set up at Mannuthy, Kerala.
1974
  1. Central Soil and Water Conservation Research and Training Institute started at Dehradun.
1976
  1. Central Institute of Agricultural Engineering started at Bhopal.
  2. Central Institute for Cotton Research started at Nagpur.
  3. National Bureau of Plant Genetic Resources set up at New Delhi.
  4. National Bureau of Soil Survey and Land-Use Planning started functioning independently at New Delhi; shifted to Nagpur in 1978.
  5. Integrated Rural Development programme started.

  1. Prakash Singh Badal appointed Minister, Food and Agriculture, Government of India.
  2. Surjit Singh Barnala appointed Minister, Food and Agriculture, as Parkash Singh Badal becomes Chief Minister of Punjab.
  3. Production of Potatoes in India rises to 7,287 thousand tones.
1978
  1. Central Agricultural Research Institute for Andaman and Nicobar Group of Islands started at Port Blair.
1979
  1. Brahm Prakash Choudhary appointed Minister, Food and Agriculture, Government of India.
  2. Central Avian Research Institute comes into being at Izatnagar, Uttar Pradesh.
1980
  1. Ramagundam Fertilizer project completed to manufacture ammonia and urea.
  2. Wealth tax on agricultural lands-an iniquitous, Vexatious and anti-improvement measure-abolished.
