Fertilizer Consumption Per Hectare
The all-India per hectare consumption of nutrients for the year 2023-24 is around 139.81kg whereas the per hectare consumption of nutrients for Punjab for the year 2023-24 is around 247.61kg.”
Punjab is the leading consumer of fertilisers in terms of per kilo gram per hectare which is 9% of the whole fertilisers used in the country.
total consumption of chemical pesticides in Punjab reached 5,270 MT in 2023-24 that is 66 kg per hectare, up from 5,130 MT in 2022-23. This makes Punjab the third highest consumer of chemical pesticides in the country, following Uttar Pradesh 11,828 MT and Maharashtra 8,718 MT, which have significantly larger cultivated areas of 2.41 crore hectares and 2.05 crore hectares, respectively.
The pesticide consumption of Punjab accounts for 9.52 per cent of the national total. In 2022-23, the urea requirement increased to 29.25 lakh MT from 28.30 lakh MT in 2020-21 and NPK demand surged to 1.70 lakh MT from 0.76 lakh MT during the same period. While the demand for DAP (Diammonium Phosphate) declined to 7.25 lakh MT from 8.25 lakh MT.
On the other hand the state is at the 11th position in the country as far as adopting bio-pesticides as it only consumes 193 MT per annum.
All-India NPK use ratio widened from 6.5:2.8:1 during 2020-21 to 7.7:3.1:1 during 2021-22.
Per hectare use of total nutrients (N+P2O5+K2O) reduced from 160.1 kg in 2020-21 to 146.7 kg in 2021-22
